A Prayer for the One Drowning in Addiction

A raw, honest prayer for those in the grip of addiction — and for those who love them.

▶ Listen in English

God, I am tired of promising myself I will do better and then watching myself fall again. I am ashamed of the version of me that keeps showing up, the one I hate, the one I cannot seem to shake no matter how hard I try. I know You see me in the mess I have made, and I am terrified that even You have grown tired of looking. But somewhere underneath the wreckage I still believe You are there, that Your hands have not let go even when mine have. I do not have the strength to fix this, and I am finally out of the energy to pretend otherwise. So I am asking You to do what I cannot — hold me still long enough for something to change, and let there be even one person in my life who refuses to give up on me. Remind me that I am not just the worst thing I have ever done. Give me one more day, and then one more after that. Amen.

Reflection

Paul writes in Romans 7:15, 'I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.' Addiction is not a failure of character that puts you beyond grace — it is one of the most ancient human cries that Scripture speaks into directly. The God who met the prodigal while he was 'still a long way off' is the same God who runs toward you in your lowest moment, not after you have cleaned yourself up.
