Prayers
Honest words for anxiety, grief, waiting, fear, shame, and hope. For the moments faith feels hardest.
There are two kinds of moments when people reach for a prayer. The first is the Sunday morning kind — structured, communal, rehearsed. The second is the 2am kind — unstructured, alone, desperate, and very often wordless. These prayers are for the second kind.
The prayers here are written for specific situations: the grief that doesn't follow a schedule, the anxiety that circles back no matter how many times you hand it over, the shame that church culture tends to skip past, the loneliness that exists even in a full life, the exhaustion of caregiving that nobody prepared you for. They are not aspirational prayers — they do not assume the person praying is doing well. They assume the person praying is in it.
Each prayer is available in English and Spanish, with audio so you can listen if reading is too much. They are meant to be used — prayed aloud, adapted for your specific situation, passed to someone who needs them. If the words are close but not exactly right, change them. The goal is honest conversation with God, not perfectly worded performance.
If you are in a crisis — if your anxiety, grief, addiction, or mental health needs more than a prayer — please reach out to a professional. These prayers do not replace counseling, therapy, or medical care. They are meant to run alongside those things, as part of honest faith in real life.
For Peace
Lord, my mind won't slow down and my chest feels tight with worry I can't name. I know You said not to be anxious — but I am. So I'm coming to You not with peace, but asking for it. Take the weight I've been carrying like it's mine to fix. Remind me that You are already in what I'm afraid of. Let me breathe. Let me trust. Let me rest in You. Amen.
Father, I am afraid. Not of something small — of something that feels like it could undo me. I've read that You have not given me a spirit of fear. But right now it doesn't feel like a choice. So I'm asking You to do what I cannot do myself: Replace this fear with something steady. Not bravado. Just quiet trust. Remind me You've already been to where I'm headed. Go before me again. Amen.
For Hard Seasons
God, I am grieving and I don't know how long this is supposed to last. I've heard You are close to the brokenhearted. I need that to be true right now. I'm not asking You to fix it or explain it. Just — be here. In the silence. In the ache. Hold me in a way I can feel even when I can't feel anything. Help me believe this loss doesn't have the final word. Amen.
Father, I've been waiting a long time. For the door to open. For the answer to come. For things to change. I don't understand Your timing and I won't pretend I do. But I choose to trust that You are working in the silence. That this season has a purpose I can't see yet. Hold my hope steady. Keep me from bitterness. Let me wait well. Amen.
For the Soul
Lord, I've done something I'm not proud of. Or I've believed something about myself that I'm not sure You'd agree with. Either way, shame is sitting heavy on me right now. I know You say there is no condemnation for those in Christ — but it doesn't always feel that way from the inside. Remind me who I am in You. Not what I've done. Not what was done to me. Speak over the shame with something truer. Amen.
God, I have nothing left. I've been running on empty for longer than I should have, and I'm done pretending otherwise. I thought rest was something I had to earn. You said it was a gift. Help me receive it without guilt. Help me stop measuring my worth by my output. Let me be still — really still — in You. Restore me from the inside out. Amen.
Father, I'm asking for healing. I don't know exactly how You will answer — in full, in part, or not the way I'm expecting. But I believe You are a God who heals, and I'm bringing this to You. Be near to my body, my mind, my spirit — wherever the wound is deepest. Give wisdom to those who are helping. Give patience to me as I wait. And whatever happens, let me know You are in it. Amen.
