A Prayer for When You Can't Stop Comparing

For those exhausted by measuring their life against everyone else's and always coming up short

Grace

▶ Listen in English

God, I'm tired of watching everyone else's life and feeling like mine is falling behind. I scroll and I compare and I diminish, and I know deep down this isn't the life You made me for. The comparison is quiet at first — just a glance, just a moment — and then it settles into something that sounds like truth: that I am too little, too slow, too ordinary for the kind of life that matters. Break that lie in me. Help me to stop measuring my insides against everyone else's outsides, and remind me that You did not make me to run someone else's race. I want to be free of the score I'm always keeping, free enough to be genuinely glad for other people's good things, free enough to see my own life clearly and with gratitude. Root me in who I am to You, where there is no ranking, no performance review, no comparison — just being fully known and completely loved. Amen.

Reflection

Galatians 6:4 urges each person to test their own work, 'so that they may have reason for boasting in themselves alone, and not in someone else.' Paul understood that comparison is a spiritual trap — it robs us of the particular calling and grace given uniquely to each person. Jesus never ranked his disciples against each other; he called Peter to fish, Mary to sit and listen, Paul to travel roads he'd never walked — each to an original, unrepeatable life. Yours is no different.
