A Prayer for the Dark That Won't Lift

A raw, honest prayer for those walking through depression, when God feels distant and the heaviness won't leave.

Hope

▶ Listen in English

God, I don't know how to start this prayer because I'm not sure you feel close right now — and I'm too tired to pretend otherwise. There is a heaviness in me that has no name and no easy explanation, and it follows me from morning into night no matter what I do. I go through the motions, I smile when I'm supposed to, I answer 'fine' when people ask — but inside I am barely holding on. I don't need you to fix everything today. I just need to know you are in here with me — in the fog, in the silence, in the places I don't let anyone else see. Help me take the next small step, even when that next step is only getting out of bed. Remind me that this feeling is not the truth about who I am or who you are. And on the days I can't believe that for myself, please carry it for me. Amen.

Reflection

Depression is not a spiritual failure. Psalm 88 ends with darkness as its only companion — no resolution, no sudden light — and yet it is still scripture, a prayer God received and kept. Jesus himself said, 'My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death' (Matthew 26:38). You are not alone in the dark, and the dark does not disqualify you from being held.
