A Prayer for the Distance Between Us

For those carrying the quiet grief of an estranged relationship with someone they love

Hope

▶ Listen in English

God, there is someone I love who feels impossibly far away — not across miles, but across silence and pain that has hardened into walls I don't know how to climb. I don't know how we got here, and I have spent too many nights replaying the moments, wondering what I could have said or left unsaid. Some days I am angry, and some days I am just hollow with missing who we used to be to each other. I carry this in places no one else can see — in the empty chair at the table, in the holidays that are quieter than they should be, in the messages I draft and delete without sending. I am tired of carrying it alone, and I am tired of pretending I am fine. Help me to grieve this loss honestly, to release the bitterness before it becomes all I am, and to trust that you hold both of us even when we cannot hold each other. If reconciliation is still possible, God, make a way I cannot see from here. If it is not, give me a peace I cannot manufacture on my own. Amen.

Reflection

Estrangement is one of the quietest griefs we carry, and one of the least spoken about in church pews. Romans 12:18 offers an honest permission: 'If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone' — a verse that acknowledges, gently but clearly, that peace is not always something we can achieve alone or on demand. God does not ask us to force doors that are closed, but to release what we cannot control and trust Him to hold both sides of every fractured relationship.
