A Prayer in Grief's Second Year

For those still carrying loss long after the world has stopped asking how they're doing

Comfort

▶ Listen in English

Lord, everyone else seems to have moved on — they've stopped saying her name, stopped checking in, stopped bringing anything to my door. But I am still here. Still grief-soaked on ordinary Tuesday mornings. Still reaching for my phone to call her before I remember that I can't. I thought time was supposed to help, and maybe it has in ways I can't yet see, but today grief just feels like a room I live in that no one else enters anymore. No one warns you that the second year is quieter — that sorrow doesn't shrink, it just becomes something you carry more privately. I'm so tired of carrying it alone. See me here, God. I am not fine. I miss her more than I know how to say. Meet me in this quiet ache, in this love that has nowhere left to go, and remind me that you collect every tear I have ever cried — that you see grief no one else is watching anymore. Hold me in the dark of this second year. Amen.

Reflection

The psalmist writes, 'You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in your bottle' (Psalm 56:8). Grief has no expiration date, and God is not rushing you through it. The second year of loss often feels more isolated than the first — the condolences have quieted, but the ache has not. Take comfort in knowing that God's eyes remain on you even in the grief the rest of the world has stopped witnessing.

No estoy bien.
