For those grieving a lost sense of self — through job loss, illness, an empty nest, or any life change that erased who they thought they were.

God, I don't know who I am anymore. The role I built my life around is gone — the title, the purpose, the version of me that felt solid and real — and what's left feels like a hollow outline of a person. I'm not sure how to move through a day without the thing that used to tell me I mattered. I'm embarrassed by how lost I feel, and more embarrassed to admit that I built so much of myself on something that could just disappear. Would you meet me in this empty space, not with a quick replacement or a lesson, but with your presence — the kind that doesn't require me to be anything I'm not right now? Remind me that you knew me before I had a title, before I had a role, before I had anything to offer the world, and that you called that version of me good. Help me trust that who I am in you isn't something that can be taken, downsized, outgrown, or lost — even when everything else is. Amen.
We often don't realize how deeply we've tied our worth to what we do until it's taken from us. The psalmist cried out, 'I am poor and needy; may the Lord think of me' (Psalm 40:17) — not offering credentials, just honest need. In Christ, your identity was never the job, the role, or the season: 'You are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus' (Ephesians 2:10) — before the doing, there is a being, and that is where God begins.
