A Prayer for the Morning After

For anyone waking up with the weight of relapse, tasting shame before coffee, wondering if they'll ever stop starting over.

God—or whatever part of me still believes you're there—

I'm awake. I didn't want to be. I wanted to stay in the black nothing of sleep where I didn't have to remember what I did last night.

But here I am. Mouth dry. Head pounding. That sick feeling in my stomach that isn't just physical. The empties are still on the counter. The texts I sent are still in my phone. The promises I broke are still broken.

I had 47 days. Forty-seven. I counted every single one. I white-knuckled through cravings and called my sponsor and drank so much sparkling water I thought I'd float away. And then yesterday happened—or didn't happen, really. Nothing dramatic. Just a long day and a familiar voice in my head that said, 'You've earned this. Just once. You're different now.'

I'm not different. I'm exactly the same. Sitting on this bathroom floor at 6 a.m., looking at my face in the cabinet mirror, wondering who that person even is anymore.

The worst part isn't the headache. It's the math. Calculating how to hide this. Deciding who I'll lie to today. Rehearsing the 'I'm fine' I'll say at work while my hands shake.

I don't know how to pray right now. I don't know if I deserve to. People say you don't give up on us, but I've given up on myself so many times I've lost count. This is—what, the fifth restart? The eighth? Each time I swear it's the last. Each time I believe myself. And each time I end up right back here, crumpled and stinking of my own failure.

I'm so tired of starting over.

But I'm more tired of staying down.

So I guess this is me, asking. Not for a miracle. Not for the craving to disappear. Just for enough strength to stand up off this tile floor. Enough courage to tell one person the truth today instead of performing 'fine' for everyone. Enough something—grace, maybe, if that's a real thing—to believe that 47 days weren't wasted just because day 48 broke me.

I don't feel forgiven. I don't feel hopeful. I feel like a fraud and a failure and someone who keeps wasting second chances.

But I'm still talking to you. That has to count for something.

Help me get up.

Help me try again.

Even though I don't want to.

Especially because I don't want to.

Reflection

This prayer is for the specific agony of the morning after—not the moment of choosing recovery, but the moment of waking up in the wreckage of a choice you swore you'd never make again. If that's you today, you're not starting from zero. You're starting from experience.

Estoy despierto. No quería estarlo.

Ahora eres diferente.'

No soy diferente. Soy exactamente igual.

No sé cómo orar ahora mismo. No sé si merezco hacerlo.

No me siento perdonado. No me siento esperanzado.

Ayúdame a levantarme.

Ayúdame a intentarlo otra vez.

Aunque no quiera.

Especialmente porque no quiero.
