For parents aching over a child who has walked away — holding on to God when love feels unanswered
▶ Listen in English
Lord, I did not expect it to hurt like this. My child is gone — not dead, but gone from me in the ways that matter most — and I carry this grief in places no one else can see. I replay everything, wondering what I missed or what I should have done differently, and some nights the weight of it crushes me. I know the story of the prodigal son, and I cling to the father who ran. Help me to be that kind of waiting — not passive, not resentful, but alive with hope that is rooted in you rather than in their choices. Let me release my grip on an outcome I cannot control and trust that you love my child even more fiercely than I do. Show me how to keep the light on without burning myself out in the waiting. I believe you are already at work in their life, in ways I cannot see. Hold us both. Amen.
In Luke 15, the waiting father does not merely accept his son's return — he sees him 'while he was still a long way off' and runs. That kind of watching is itself an act of faith. If you are a parent in this pain, you are not alone, and your love for your child is a faint echo of the love God holds for both of you.
