For those grieving a broken relationship with family, carrying the silence and unanswered questions of estrangement.
▶ Listen in English
God, there is a chair at the table that stays empty, and I don't know how to stop looking at it. I carry the weight of a relationship that broke — maybe slowly, maybe all at once — and I still don't fully understand how we got here. Some days I'm angry. Some days I just miss who we used to be. I don't need You to fix it today, but I need You to hold me while I grieve it. Give me the courage to stop rehearsing old arguments in my head and the wisdom to know the difference between a door that needs to stay closed for my healing and one that fear is keeping shut. Let me not harden my heart entirely — not toward them, and not toward myself. Remind me that estrangement doesn't mean I failed, and it doesn't mean I'm beyond being known and loved. Whether this relationship is ever restored or not, let me find my way back to wholeness. Amen.
Estrangement is one of grief's most complex forms — mourning someone who is still alive. Psalm 27:10 reminds us that even when father or mother forsake us, the Lord will receive us. Healing from broken relationships doesn't always look like reconciliation; sometimes it looks like trusting God to carry what we cannot fix, and releasing both the other person and ourselves from the prison of unresolved pain.
